Band News...
NEWS for 2017
Tuesday, November 22, 2016

Hey all!! Been a long while since we have posted a NEWS item! With the advent of social media and the increasing use of said media, we have neglected our website "a little." We LOVE this website, and we encourage you all to sign the guestbook and drop a us a line, via email. We do have some significant NEWS for y'all, and it is right around the corner, or following on the heals of the 2016 Holiday season! Rumor has it within the MSB Camp that there will be a Fan Appreciation Party thrown, by the band, and will be held in a Hall in Lansing. At this time we can say that there will be a BYOB, potluck, and MSB playing. A future date is being discussed. How about that?! Mike, Steve and Dan
Long Awaited Update!
Thursday, February 18, 2010

Wow...can't believe it's been a year since I posted something in the MSB News column.  Here's what's up:

After a long, anxious and nerve-racking period of searching for a possible replacement drummer due to Dan's work/school schedule, things have finally settled down and we're once again booking regular gigs.  Oh yeah...Dan's not going anywhere!  Whew!  It just wouldn't have been the same without him.  Steve and I were very disheartened at having to carry on with a new member and thankfully we won't have to.

We'll be debuting at Jo's Diner & Bar in downtown Bath (yes, there's a downtown!) on March 5th (Friday). Check the "gigs" tab for details.  This should be a blast!  Cool little place with great food, pool table, Club Keno, etc.  Let's show'em how the Not-So-Classic-Rock'ers party!

We've added several new songs to our already massive set list.  Always keeping the material fresh, we've even been working on some acoustic-only sets which should be pretty cool.

The infamous "Cowbell Girl" has moved from Indianapolis back to Michigan.  She now resides in Troy.  Watch for her at future gigs.

Hope everyone is having a decent 2010 so far and we look forward to seeing you at an upcoming show.

Mike, Steve & Dan

6 Hands Down Keeps Rolling
Wednesday, February 11, 2009

Once again our buddies in 6 Hands Down have shown why they are considered one of the top live bands around.  They just returned from their second consecutive (and third in the last four years) trip to Memphis, Tenn for the annual IBF best new band competition, representing CABS.  While last year saw a strong performance, this year 6HD won their venue and competed in the finals!  Seems like their star is continuing to rise.  Congratulations to Kev, Rex, Jimmy and Dan for a job well done.  We're proud of you guys!  Look for 6 Hands Down in the Lansing area and go see them.  You won't be sorry.

Busy Year Ahead
Sunday, January 25, 2009

As you can tell from our upcoming gigs page we're filling up 2009 pretty quickly.  Lot's of outdoor shows and also our usual venues.  We're glad to add more dates at Buddies (Okemos) and the Oakwood Lounge (Pewamo).  Look for us also at Moriarty's Pub, Swany's (St Johns) and the Center Stage.

Your continued support keeps us rockin' & rollin'.  We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming gig!

Loss of a Good Friend
Sunday, January 25, 2009

By now I'm sure most of you are aware of the untimely passing of Glenn Harr, owner of the Bridge St. Pub in Diamondale.  MBS played there numerouse times and were always met by Glenn with a smiling face and a handshake.  Our thoughts go out to his family.  He was a good friend and will be missed.

Thumper of the Bass here...

Got back from our honeymoon around 11pm last night (Sunday).  Had a great time and almost perfect weather (no rain, just cold and cloudy thru Wisconsin and the U.P. the last day.  We logged a little over 3200 miles thru 7 states.  Imagine Saturday morning we were near the Montana/North Dakota border and were back in Lansing the following evening.  Major riding, sore butts and great memories.  Lots of pix too.  I'll post a few here when things settle down a bit.  Thanx for keeping us in your thoughts.

Now it's back to reality!  Hope to see you Oct. 10th at Rendezvous on the Grand.  I miss my band!  Mike.

Oooooh...The Big Day's Coming!
Sunday, August 24, 2008

Hey folks, your trusty bass player here.

September promises to be a pretty exciting month for me.  Not only will I celebrate ten years with Lansing Sanitary Supply on the 15th, but I turn 49 on the 18th and...oh yeah...I'M GETTING MARRIED on the 20th!  Just a small ceremony (that has grown to over 60 guests) at Cooley Gardens with acoustic guitarist Steve Coscarelli and vocalist Kimberly Rivas performing "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and "At Last".  It will be followed by a reception at our house. Debra and I will be leaving for S. Dakota/Wyoming/Montana the next day on the Harley, choosing to take the ferry across Lake Michigan instead of going around Chicago.  Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we start our journey together.

Looking forward to playing again in October and I hope the ring doesn't interfere with my bass playing!  :P

Time For Brianpalooza II
Tuesday, July 29, 2008

It's already been a year?  This Saturday, August 2nd we will be performing at Brianpalooza II on Chadwick Road just north of Dewitt.  The food/booze/fun/music starts around 7pm.  This is a free party for anyone who wants to kick back with some friends and enjoy some live music.  BYOB if you prefer but there will be refreshments and food provided.  Hope to see you there!
St. Johns Gets Different Taste of MSB.
Friday, July 11, 2008

The recent Taste of St. Johns festival was a huge success.  Much thanx to Stan Budzynski for sitting in on guitars/vocals while Coz was on a much needed vacation with his family.

A cool wind was blowing under the huge beer tent as we blistered through three full sets of rock and blues standards to a decent crowd.  Stan got some plugs in for his band Third Degree and even sold a few cds.   Mike bought a framed painting from one of the many vendors for his sweetie Deb...(she liked it...hey Mikey!).

Dan's parents showed up too.  They were totally cool and I think I could sit for hours and listen to his dad.  They sure are proud of their son.

Thanx again to the St. Johns downtown management board for having us and we look forward to entertaining the "mint city" again real soon.

Help Bring Rock Music Back To South Lansing
Wednesday, June 4, 2008

Our next gig at Sky Lanes (formerly Metro Bowl) will be ground breaking to say the least.  The new owners are very excited to once again offer live rock and roll music at the all new Liquids night club.  Those of us who remember The Other Room and the Harlequin night clubs of the 1970's will remember the great music and atmosphere.

Please join MSB for this truly special event.  There will be drink specials, prizes, give-aways and great entertainment throughout the night.  A $5 cover charge is required and will be well worth it.

Let's pack this place with our loyal "not so classic rockers" and show them that a good time can still be had in south Lansing.

We look forward to seeing you all there!

Mike, Steve & Liz

We Have The Technology...
Sunday, April 13, 2008

Please keep Steve in your thoughts as he has gone under the knife once again and is currently recouperating.  This time it was surgery on his knee.  The doctors assure us he will be bigger...faster...stronger...well, you know the rest! (Anything to get out of lugging the equipment around!)  Anyways, we'll have him propped up and ready to play next weekend at Mort's.  Hope to see you there.

Exciting Upcoming Events/Gigs
Sunday, April 13, 2008

We're pleased to announce a couple of special gigs during the upcoming summer:

First up is June 14th (Sat) at the all new Liquids club inside the newly renovated Sky Lanes (formerly Metro Bowl) in Lansing. The new owners are anxious to bring rock n' roll back to the southside and have enlisted MSB to set this off! Liquids was formerly known as "The Other Room" back in the days. The inside of the club has been totally redone and welcomes you with an old nightclub atmosphere. This gig will be heavily promoted so watch for upcoming info on the radio and in the paper. We hope you'll join us for a night of great music, drink specials, prizes and fun!

Our next gig will be in Vermontville on July 12th (Sat) for the 1st annual "Bikin' for Granny" poker run. This worthwhile event benefits the Eaton County Medical Care Facility and will have many sponsors.  There will also be a huge motorcycle poker run which will finish at Roadrunners in Vermontville. This is an all day event with activities, food, drink, and...oh yeah...The Mike Shafley Band!  Please come out and support a great cause.

Some Shout-outs!
Saturday, February 9, 2008

Congratulations the bands 6 Hands Down and TC & The Roadmasters for their efforts at the annual IBF competition held in Memphis a couple weeks ago.  Although the finals eluded them they definately put on a great showing.  You guys all wail!

Also, MSB sadly announces the departure of "Cowbell Girl" (Mike's stepdaughter-to-be, Heather).  Due to a recent promotion she has moved to the Indianapolis area.  We wish her much success and hope for a rare sighting again in the future.

Rested, Recovered & Ready To Rock!
Saturday, January 26, 2008

Hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday.  Did ya git lots 'o goodies?

Quick update on things...

Steve's wrist surgery went well and he's on the fast track to a full recovery.  We had our first rehearsal the other day and had a great jam.  Sure is nice to play as a band again.  Looking forward to our "return" gig at The Barn in downtown Grand Ledge.  This will be our debut here and we hope to see you all.

Our last gig at Swany's in St. Johns was a huge success.  It was a surprise party for Dana and the place was packed.  Always a blast jamming in the Mint City.  The only glitch was during load-out we left a rack of lights on top of the dumpster!  We discovered this the following day and after some nervous phone calls we were informed the Swany's staff found them that night and put them inside.  Whew!

During these few off weeks the band has been busy with equipment repairs, technical updates (check out the new homepage graphics and photo morph), and song list tweaking.  We've come up with a system to start rotating our vast reportoir of material.  Lot's of songs have been gathering dust to make way for new ones and we want to keep things fresh.  Some of these will even sound new to our growing numbers of NSCR's.  Hope you enjoy them.

MSB looks forward to a great 2008.  Our calender is already filling up fast.  February alone has us at The Barn, The Green Door, and Swany's.  It also marks the one year anniversary for our drummer Liz.  Guess he likes the gig!  Also, due to popular demand we did a second printing of the MSB t-shirts.  We've dropped the price to $10 and all sizes are still available.

Please join us Feb 16th for our Barn debut.  We look forward to shaking out the cobwebs and rocking downtown G.L.

Mike, Steve & Liz

Happy Holidays From MSB
Wednesday, November 21, 2007

Well, it's been quite a year!  Lots of gigs, new fans, great music, and cool memories for sure.  As '07 winds down, we'd like to take a moment to thank everyone for making this year such a success.  Your continued support for MSB and "Not So Classic Rock" is very much appreciated.  We do this for-and couldn't have done it without- YOU!  Thanks for helping us make it all happen.

The band has scaled back it bookings for December so we can work on a bunch of new tunes.  We try to keep things fresh as often as we can.  After our Jan. 5, 2008 gig at Swany's in St. Johns, Steve will be having surgery on his right wrist.  The dreaded carpal tunnel syndrome strikes again.  He will be rehabbing for the remainder of the month and the band will then start rehearsals once again in preparation for our debut at The Barn in Grand Ledge on February 16th, 2008.  That will be one gig you won't want to miss.

The addition of the Mike Shafley Band T-shirts has been met with great excitement.  They're selling fast so get yours as soon as you can.   They're available at all gigs.

We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming show.  Best wishes to you all for a safe Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year.

Happy Holidays!

Mike, Steve & Liz

Wednesday, November 7, 2007

We're happy to announce the arrival of the new Mike Shafley Band T-shirt!  They turned out awesome!  See our news item below for details.

Community Day at Younkers Dept Store - Lansing Mall
Thursday, November 1, 2007

The Mike Shafley Band will be performing two sets of acoustic music during the Nov 10th "Community Day" at the Lansing Mall Younkers store.  We will be set up near their main inside entrance and will play from 1:00pm - 3:00pm.  (We hear there's been a Tiffany sighting...!)   Sorry though...due to store policies we will be unable to offer MSB t-shirts at this gig.
This annual event helps to raise money for local charities and services.  Special discount coupon books can be purchased anytime at the store and are good for Community Day only.  There will be several other acts throughout the day (magic, music, etc.) with MSB being the only band.
Please come out and support a great cause.  Hope to see you there.  Mike, Steve & Liz

How Sweet It Was
Sunday, October 21, 2007

Thanx to all who attended the Sweetest Day gig at the Bridge St. Pub.  We hope you had a great time.  Congratulations to all who won raffle prizes.  The "special edition" Mike Shafley Band t-shirt is sure to become a collector's item...well... maybe!  Thanx to Glenn and all the great BSP staff for taking care of our fans.  You all are the best.

Official MSB T-Shirts Are On the Way
Thursday, October 25, 2007

Steve, Liz and myself are proud to announce the upcoming release of the official Mike Shafley Band t-shirt!  This has been a long time in the making and we are excited to finally have a shirt to offer our many NSCR fans.

The design was changed and modified several times before we found exactly what we were looking for.  Click here to see it:

Steve's addition of the cool new font gave it an instant classic look and, of course, we kept the trademark logo and the phrase "Not So Classic Rock" (coined by former drummer Shawn Doolittle) in vivid blue.  The hardest part was getting the photo right.  We didn't want it to look like a picture but more like an image.  The result speaks for itself!  Thanx to Steve's brother Bob for his assistance in the photo manipulation.

The shirts are expected by mid November but possibly in time for our Nov. 8th gig at the Green Door.  Details below:

All shirts are $15.00 each - BLACK ONLY! (Is there any other color for a band t-shirt?)

Considering none of us are in the retail business, all shirts will be first come, first served.  Please feel free to contact one of us to reserve one if needed.

Please remember, this is only the initial printing and more shirts will become available as sales demand.  These make great Christmas gifts...

We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming gig.

Mike, Steve & Liz

Hey...Someone's At The Door Again!
Thursday, September 27, 2007

The Green Door that is!  MSB is proud to be back at this famous venue on Lansing's east side Thursday, October 11th. This is also ladies night! (You dig, Mark & Tom?)  All the ladies get in free and everyone gets to enjoy drink specials, great food, and the best in not-so-classic rock.  The band has been steadily adding forgotten (but unforgettable?) songs to our list that will take you to a certain moment in your life, everytime!

Please join us for a night of good rock and roll and fun.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Ending The Summer With A Blast!
Sunday, September 16, 2007

MSB played their last summer gig at the Bridge St. Pub this past Saturday.  After a couple lean gigs at this venue during the summer months it was nice to see a large crowd once again.  We even had to park across the street for load-in!  Mike's mom was a guest roadie (okay...she held the door for us...) and after a short while we were getting into some cool tunes.  Following the first set the dinner tables were removed from the dancefloor and the true fun began.  People came to dance and dance they did!  Always great to see our loyal fans and several new faces too.  This was one of those night when the band was just on!  Lot's of new tunes were debuted to cheers and applause as MSB's ranks of NSCR's grew.  Thanx again to Glenn for having us and we look forward to seeing you all at BSP again on Sweetest Day.

Off On An Adventure
Friday, August 24, 2007

Debra and I will be hitting the open road on our Harley August 31st for a much needed vacation.  We'll be riding the mountains of Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina (including the infamous "Tail Of The Dragon") for several days.  I even convinced Deb not to book any hotels!  Just hang on and enjoy the ride baby! Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.  I'll see you all at Mort's for our next gig.  Mike
After Swany's Gig...We Need A Vacation!
Wednesday, August 15, 2007

Sweaty, tired, calloused, sore, hoarse, completely spent, and totally satisfied.  No, not the trailer for an upcoming adult film but rather the outcome of our latest gig at Swany's Bar & Grill in St. Johns.  The annual Mint Festival weekend was the setting as Friday night saw a good crowd and familiar faces.  Saturday on the other hand was off the hook!  Wall to wall people, birthday's, anniversary's, dancing on the tables, it was all there.  We even played an extra hour and a half as the crowd kept asking for more.  You can tell it was a good night when the dancefloor is still pretty packed when all is said and done.  Our fans even went 2 for 3 on "guess the song for a beer".  And so it goes...another town witnesses MSB's unique brand of rock and roll.  Dana "The Queen" was the perfect host and the waitstaff were the best.  Thanx to all you St. Johnians(?) for coming out including Liz's crew, and our steadfast fans.  What a great way to begin our vacation break.  We hope to rock your downtown again soon.

Mike, Steve & Liz

Brianpalooza I: A Glimpse Of Things To Come?
Thursday, August 9, 2007

The first annual Brianpalooza bash was held at Brian's place in Dewitt on August 4th.  All the necessary things were there: people (lot's of 'em), food (great BBQ pork!), keg ('nuff said!), and...oh yeah...The Mike Shafley Band!  Brian has been the closest thing to a roadie MSB has never paid to have!?  He is a true friend and our self proclaimed biggest fan.  When he approached us to play this gig how could we refuse?  He and friend Burt even built us a stage complete with drum riser!  A warm summer night with the surrounding trees glowing from the stage lights was the perfect backdrop for an evening of friends and music.  Big shout out to Liz's son Trevor for sitting in on drums for a few cuts.  You wail bro and are definately a chip off the old drumstick.  Even Brian himself held down the drum beat (puff...puff) for a jam.  The mysterious "Cowbell Girl" appeared but, to everyone's dismay, didn't bring her equipment.  (We all have the fever, Heather.) Thanx to Brian and his family/friends for putting on a first rate party.  Even the mosquitos had a blast!  Hopefully this is the beginning of a tradition.

Green Door Debut a Success
Thursday, August 9, 2007

An ordinary Tuesday night became not so ordinary when the "Not So Classic Rock" of The Mike Shafley Band filled the Green Door Blues Bar & Grill on July 31st.  It was great to kick off the music to a packed house!  The band couldn't have imagined a better turnout.  Lots of friends and family were there along with many first time NSCR'ers.  What a blast to play a full four sets and still have to dig into the music bag to pull out several encores for the still hoppin' dance floor!  Many thanx to Jen for taking a chance, the waitstaff and kitchen for keeping our fans happy, and to everyone of you who keep on supporting MSB.  We look forward to walking thru the "...Door" again!  Mike, Steve & Liz

Putting The ''Wam'' In Pewamo
Monday, July 16, 2007

Of course we don't mean Wham the band (MSB don't play dat!)  Anyways, if you missed our latest gig at the Oakwood Lounge in Pewamo you missed an event!  This little town knows how to spend a Saturday night!  The place was packed and the dancefloor was hoppin' from the git-go.  Great to see so many new faces turn out to see MSB.  Liz has quite a following north of Lansing!  There was some awesome dancing (gymnastics?) going on and the band was in top form considering we had a three week hiatus.  Our new light show seemed to go over well too.  Nice to finally see Liz back there drumming!  He looked like he really enjoys it.  The band thanks Brad, Lisa, Chad and all the other Oakwood crew for having us.  This place is definately worth the drive.   Mike, Steve & Liz.

Getting Our Foot In The Green Door
Friday, June 29, 2007

Well, MSB finally did booked at the Green Door!  Our tireless harassment of Jen paid off ;)  This Lansing landmark has undergone a huge transformation over the last few years.  Still known as the blues venue, the GD now offers up some kickin' rock & roll too.  Thus, the Mike Shafley Band!

Join Steve, Lizard and myself for some "not so classic rock"  Tuesday night, July 31st from 9:30pm-1:30am.  There's a $3.00 cover charge (100% goes to the band), free pool until closing, huge dance floor, drink specials, great food, hi-def TV, Club Keno, and a waitstaff worthy of a few double takes!  Who knew a Tuesday night could be such a blast?  Hope to see you there!

Way to go Hambone!
Tuesday, May 22, 2007

Congratulations to MSB fill-in drummer Rex Hambone (see item at bottom of this page) and his band 6 Hands Down, for winning the recent Capital Area Blues Society's Blues Brawl held at the Green Door.  They will be traveling to Memphis, Tenn. next February to represent CABS at the International Blues Federation's annual worldwide blues competition.  I was fortunate enough to make this trip a few years ago with Hambone as part of the Whoodoo Band.  MSB wishes 6 Hands Down (Rex, Kev, Jimmy, and Dan) all the best and good luck!  You guys wail!

A "Rendezvous..." With Success
Monday, May 21, 2007

Well, MSB performed their first official "fill-in" gig @ the Rendezvous On The Grand in Lansing's Old Town.  Good turnout for such short notice and we had a great time!  What a surprise to see a small posse show up wearing custom MSB World Tour 2007 t-shirts!  Too cool!  Thanx to Pat for taking a chance and to Roux for suggesting us as a replacement.  Hope your vocalist recovers quickly guys.  Look to possibly see MSB at the Rendezvous again in the future.   Mike, Steve & Liz

MSB Invades Old Town
Friday, May 18, 2007

Due to a sudden cancellation, the Mike Shafley Band will be filling in at the Rendezvous On The Grand in Old Town tonight only!  This is a great chance to show the folks in Old Town what the rest of Lansing already knows! This is a very cool venue with a big dance floor, pool table, and great drink prices.  There may be a small cover charge so be ready.  Hope to see you there!

Back At The Double Deuce
Tuesday, May 1, 2007

We'll be rockin' the "Deuce" on May 11 & 12.  This is where Liz's first gig with MSB was so it's a homecoming of sorts.  The band has really evolved since that cold, snowy, (and packed) weekend.  Lots of new music, equipment, and most of all...attitude!  Looking forward to a little R&R...Ridin' and Rockin'!  Come on out to Lansing's only true biker bar.  Good food, music, pool tables, keno, and a hot waitstaff make for a great night out on Lansing's southside.  Hope to see you there!

Bridge St Pub ROCKED!
Sunday, March 18, 2007

What a St Pat's Day @ BSP!  So glad we got there early for set-up as the place was jumpin'!  Lot's of people will remember where they were during the great St Patty's Day blackout of '07.  Early on the whole venue went dark during one of our lightest songs (pun intended).  After a half hour or so the power was restored to a cheering crowd and the band picked up where it had left off (literally!) jamming thru an hour + set.  The tiny dance floor area held it's own until later when tables were finally pushed aside.  Thankfully nobody did a backflip over the monitors.  Aside from MSU losing their hoop game the night was a blast!  Thanx to Glenn and his staff for a great party, Kenny and Paul for sittin' in, and to all our fans who make this worthwhile for us.  Hope to see you all again soon.  Mike, Steve & Liz.

St. Patrick's Day Gig
Friday, March 2, 2007

MSB will be at the Bridge St. Pub in Dimondale for St. Patrick's Day.  It's shaping up to be a big party!  Get there a little early and grab a table and some of the Pub's great food.  Put on your green and come out and see us.  We'll have some new tunes for you too.  For more information contact the Bridge St Pub at (517) 646-9188.

MSB Welcomes Lizard (Liz)
Friday, January 5, 2007

The MSB would like to welcome Lizard as the new drummer for the Mike Shafley Band.  Liz has been playing and teaching drums for over 25 years.  He enjoys many styles  of music (swing, blues, rock, heavy metal, funk, jazz, dance and new wave) and is influenced by Buddy Rich, Steve Smith, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Gadd, Bernard Purdie, Motown drummers, John Bonham and Charlie Watts.  We look forward to sharing the stage with Liz.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Thanks!
Monday, December 18, 2006

Mike, Steve and their families wish you all the very best for the holidays. Hope the new year is safe and prosperous for all.

Thanx to Rex Hambone ( for filling in on drums this past weekend at Mort's. Great job as always bro. Also a shout out to the (count 'em...5!) guest drummers who sat in: Shawn, Chris, Ryan, and Dan (all the way from St. Johns) and of course Hammy! What a blast to jam with you all.

Finally, the MSB will be off until Jan. 19, 2007. In the meantime we will be bringing our new drummer up to speed on our songs and hopefully learning lots of new ones too. We always strive to keep our set list fresh and unexpected. Everybody's support over the last year has been greatly appreciated and we look forward to providing you with the best in "Not So Classic Rock".

Guest Drummer
Wednesday, December 13, 2006

Rex Hambone of the band 6 Hands Down, will be our guest drummer this weekend at Moriarty's Pub.  Rex and Mike toured the midwest as the rhythm section of the Whoodoo Band, past winner of the CABS Blues Brawl and one of the top five finalists in the 2005 worldwide International Blues Federation competition in Memphis, Tenn.  Hambone's unique style (drumming and appearance) is a must see.
